Short Film Analysis - Letter

Camera Shots

This long shot being at the start of the short film, sets a calm and relaxed scene. This is because it doesn't convey a psychological film ; hence the quite appealing and calm surroundings.
Furthermore, this type of camera shot would be highly effective for a short film (regardless of the genre) as it portrays a certain mood and even a specific message for the rest of the short film.

This over the shoulder camera shot, carries on to give hints to the audience about what type of character this man is. The camera shot is highly useful as it gives the psychological aspect of the short film more mystery for the audience.

This camera shot being a big close up, carries on the mystery of the main character and how the it allows the audience to make a judgement on his thoughts (especially with the voice over present). It doesn't give too much facial detail away - but allows the audience to view his emotions and expressions.

Sound

Voice Over - The voice over in the short film, creates a personal approach and lets the audience know that his actions are only known by him; hence the voice being his. As well as portraying the main characters inner thoughts, it gives the audience insight into what other characters are like in the voices opinion.

Foley - at the end of the short film, the use of foley was used to create a splash sound as the man throws the body into the water. This accentuates the inner emotions he has and how the mental mind can cause actions as extreme as this. It also highlights the action of burying inner troubles and pretending they don't exist.

Non - Diegetic Music - Throughout the short film, there is non diegetic music being played. The music implies that the reason of his actions are deeper what it comes across as.

Mise en scene

Costume - The man's attire being smart/casual goes against the hegemonic stereotype of a psychologically unable individual. This may because of his glasses (suggest intelligence) and his shirt (implying his possible city job?) Because of the man's attire we automatically assume he isn't up to what he's doing.

Lighting - In the short film, the lighting is low key lighting and also it is Black and White. This takes away any colour and drains the film. Colour usually adds brightness and possibly happiness. This has been removed as any message of happiness is un present.

Setting -  The setting of the short film being in a car, portrays the never ending journey within someones mind. This man driving highlights the uncomfortable situation he was in and he is now on his way to end the tension in his life. - killing his partner.
Furthermore, the film being set in a city, displays the chaotic madness the city represents. This is all represented through the man's mind/thoughts as he is clearly mentally un able.

Editing

Cut -  In the short film, there isn't many editing techniques. However, there is a significant use of a cut. The many uses of a cut, are simply effective for a short film. This is because the man's powerful words within the voice over is the strongest technique used within the short film. this cannot be over ruled - hence the minimal use of editing techniques. However, the use of a cut, simply changes the frame from the man's face to the car for example. This highlights the comparison of the two.

Narrative - The narrative of this short film, is that the man's diegesis is normal. We see him driving. We may assume he is on his way home from work. However, we are informed that he has wrote a letter to his partner. As he reads out the letter, we discover how he is distressed and is in a bad place with his girlfriend/wife. The solution to this, is by murdering his wife and disposing the body into a pool of water. This then suggests that he will go back to his regular life.
